The study found that vital capacity, tidal volume and breath holding were significantly higher in short and longterm meditators than in non-meditators. Longterm mediators had significantly higher vital capacity and expiratory pressure than short term meditators.
Diastolic blood pressure was significantly lower in both short and longterm meditators as compared to non-meditators. Heart rate was significantly lower in longterm meditators than in shortterm meditators and non-meditators.
Lipid profiles showed a significant lowering of serum cholesterol in short and longterm meditators as compared to non-meditators. Lipid profiles of short and longterm meditators was better than the profile of non-meditators, inspite of similar physical activity.
The researchers conclude that Raja Yoga meditation provides significant improvements in respiratory function, cardiovascular parameters and lipid profiles.
